Memoir/Biography

Based on interviews and where requested, research, the life story of the storyteller (could be client or a relative of) is brought together to form a rich narrative, including chapter content that all parties to the project confirm to be the most important. Often relevant photos and documents are included.

Ghost Writing

Is when a client wants their story written as if they are writing it themselves (but don’t because perhaps they do not have the time or inclination). This style, in terms of the genre, reads like an autobiography. The author is the person for whom the ghost writer, writes.

Mentoring or Writing Coach

The saying that everyone ‘has a story in them’ is, from my experience, true. It’s just that some people need some support to make that story happen. As a mentor/writing coach, I encourage clients to write themselves. I am there to be discussing ideas, reading the writing, making constructive comments about it, giving advice on structure, grammar, spelling as well as doing the word processing from hand written drafts if required. My experience with memoir writing has me well placed to know a good story when I see one and how to bring out the best in the way it is shaped, written and put together.

Schools and other Education Settings

As a trained and experienced English, History, Politics and English as a second language teacher, a passion of mine is bringing the power of biography to learners in education settings.

I believe the content and skills I help impart add value across educational settings, especially if memoir, biography or personal exploratory and reflective writing is being taught.

An example of this is my work with Melbourne Grammar School and its year 8  biography unit. This unit has been operating at the school since 2007. I became involved a year after its inception.

Nick Dawe – (Former) Head of Cain House, Teacher of English, Wadhurst, Melbourne Grammar School:

The unit works well for many reasons, but we recognise the pivotal role that Simon plays. He has many strengths both personally and professionally. He is friendly and engaging, and relates with all age groups effortlessly. Not surprising given his varied professional past, but he treats students with warmth and respect. His lectures and lessons are prepared meticulously and always delivered in the most professional manner. He is fastidious in how he prepares and presents himself for each of his visits, and has certain expectations in what he expects from us at the school, as he should. For any individual considering employing Simon for individual interview and biography, or for any school who are initiating a program similar to ours, I couldn’t be more categorical in saying that Simon Dalton is absolutely brilliant.
